Empire State Building Goes Green

The tallest building in New York City is "going green." No…the Empire State Building is not being painted. But it is getting an environmental make-over. Faith Lapidus tells about the planned changes.

The Empire State Building opened in nineteen thirty-one. It stands just over four hundred forty-three meters tall. For many years it was the tallest building in the world.
Soon, it will be one of the world's greenest. The owners of the historic building say a planned make-over will reduce energy use in the building by thirty-eight percent. They say it will save more than four million dollars a year in energy costs.
The Empire State Building has six thousand five hundred windows. New,coach outlet, special, thick glass will replace the glass currently in the windows. This insulated glass will make the inside of the building cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Paul Rode is a leader of the renovation project. He says the windows will insulate almost as well as the walls they are connected to. Workers will also add energy efficient lights and improved building control systems. These will include more modern air cooling and heating systems. The effort will help reduce carbon dioxide releases from the Empire State Building by more than one hundred thousand tons a year. Carbon dioxide is one of the gases that causes the warming of Earth's atmosphere.
Building owners say such make-overs are very important to reduce levels of greenhouse gases in New York. They say eighty percent of these gases come from city buildings.
The project is to be completed in four years. The first improvements will cost twenty million dollars. But Paul Rode says it is a sensible financial investment.

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, many Europeans moved to colonial America in part to escape religious oppression. Thomas Jefferson and other early American leaders purposely designed a national government that had no established religion. They wanted to build a country that included many religions, where citizens were free to follow their own beliefs.
The First Amendment of the Constitution supports religious freedom and places religion outside the reach of the government. It states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
This idea is often described as "the separation of church and state." President Jefferson himself used this expression. In eighteen-oh-two, he sent a letter to a religious group in the state of Connecticut. He said that the First Amendment works by "building a wall of separation between church and state."
How the First Amendment applies to life in America has often been disputed. There is deep opposition between people who support nonreligious government policies and those who want religious values to be considered. The Supreme Court has heard many cases that test the meaning of the First Amendment.
For example, the Supreme Court ruled in nineteen forty-eight that religious classes could not be taught in public schools. In nineteen sixty-two the Court decided that public schools could not require students to say prayers.
The church and state debate is still going on today. For some people, policies about stem-cell research, same-sex marriage and abortion rights threaten religious beliefs. Other people believe it is wrong to ban these practices because of religious beliefs.
Even though there is no state religion in America, there is a large, beautiful religious center in the nation's capital called the Washington National Cathedral. The official name of this Episcopal church is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. But an official says the church calls itself the Washington National Cathedral because many services of national interest have been held there. These include the funerals of three American presidents and national prayer services. This church receives no federal money and operates entirely on private donations.

We often hear the term brain aneurysm.
Joe Biden had two of them twenty years ago. Doctors saved his life. Now the sixty-five year old senator from Delaware has just been named the vice presidential choice of Democrat Barack Obama.
Ohio's first black congresswoman, however, was not so lucky. Fifty-eight year old Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones died last week within hours after a brain aneurysm burst. Doctors said she may have had no warning, which would not be unusual.
A brain aneurysm is a weak or thin area along an artery wall in the brain. It can become so thin that it ruptures and bleeds.
The most common form looks like a small, round berry hanging from the artery. The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota says as many as fifteen million people in the United States, or five percent, have a berry aneurysm. Fewer than thirty thousand will ever suffer a rupture.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates that forty percent of victims die within twenty-four hours. Another twenty-five percent die within six months.
People may live a long and healthy life and never know they have an aneurysm. But sometimes, if it gets big enough, it can cause pain or other problems that lead to its discovery.
In Joe Biden's case, his neck hurt for several weeks. Doctors thought he had a pinched nerve and a virus. But in February of nineteen eighty-eight, tests showed a leaking artery at the base of his brain. Doctors operated successfully, and again three months later for an aneurysm in another area.
Janet Sutherland is director of the Chicago chapter of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, a support group. She describes what happened when she suffered a rupture in March of two thousand four.
It began with the worst headache ever. She called emergency services. Rescuers found her collapsed in her kitchen.
The operation was a success. But she was in a coma for three weeks. She woke up blind and unable to move. She had two surgeries to return her sight and another to correct a second aneurysm. She spent five months in the hospital and many months in physical therapy.
Today Janet Sutherland can walk again, and says she can see better than ever.
Experts say most brain aneurysms happen in people born with an abnormality in an artery wall. Other causes can include head injuries,coach outlet, high blood pressure, infections, tobacco use and use of stimulant drugs.

音频下载[点击右键另存为] Chronic lower back pain is very common, and it's very difficult to treat effectively. Doctors often suggest drugs or exercise or physical therapy, but the treatments don't always work. So some patients choose alternatives, such as acupuncture. A new study suggests that can be a pretty smart choice.
Given the popularity of alternative treatments for back pain, a research team from the Center for Health Studies in Seattle and other institutions decided to compare the results of conventional treatment with the results of acupuncture therapy.
More than 600 people took part, and the researchers divided them into four groups.
Two of the groups got different kinds of acupuncture. A third group got simulated acupuncture with toothpicks. Their results were compared with a control group that received what the researchers called "usual care" - drugs, physical therapy and so on.
The researchers found that acupuncture was more effective than the usual medical care. For example, before starting treatments, participants' back pain prevented them from doing an average of 11 activities.
"Those that received 'usual care' went down to nine activities that they couldn't do, and those that received acupuncture or simulated acupuncture reported six [activities that they couldn't do]," said Dan Cherkin,doudoune moncler, lead author of the study. "This is after the seven weeks of acupuncture treatment. And some of these effects actually persisted for one year."
Cherkin said there was no significant difference based on the kind of acupuncture - or even simulated acupuncture.
"There was no apparent advantage of individualizing the treatment to the patient, and there was also no benefit apparently of actually inserting the needle compared to just stimulating points that were believed to be effective superficially."
Cherkin says his study suggests that if your back hurts, and the usual treatment isn't helping, you might consider acupuncture.
"Well, I think for the patient, the take-home message is that acupuncture has the potential to offer relief of pain that other treatments that they may have tried did not provide them. All the people in our study had never had acupuncture before, and roughly one out of five benefitted in the short run."
And for doctors, Cherkin said the message is that acupuncture is a reasonable option for patients who aren't getting relief from other treatments or who have side effects from drugs given to counter pain or inflammation.
Dan Cherkin's study came out this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, which is published by the American Medical Association. It was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health.相关的主题文章：

Scientists have discovered a groundbreaking way of learning how infants use visual information to adapt to new surroundings. Although eye-tracking technology has been around for years, it is now small enough to be used to examine how toddlers view their environment. Recent studies using this technology show important implications for studying young children's perceptual, cognitive and social development.
Imagine seeing the world through an infant's eyes. How do they navigate their new surroundings? Researchers at New York University led by Karen Adolph may have discovered a way to find out.
"This project is about natural vision and how it develops, so there's tons of research about vision in sort of artificial situations but surprisingly after more than a hundred years of study, researchers know almost nothing about where people look and why in everyday life," said Adolph, a professor of psychology at NYU.
Finn, an 8.5-month-old toddler, was among the participants in this project. She was being coaxed to wear the eye-tracking headgear, which consists of two cameras - one that's looking out on the scene to get the baby's perspective, and another that's looking at the eye to track the movement of the pupil. A computer analyzed both camera views to determine exactly where Finn was looking. The headgear weighs just 45.4 grams.
Jason Babcock is the founder of Positive Science, a New York company that has developed eye-tracking devices over the last decade. He worked to make the eye-tracking hardware smaller and lighter so that it would be possible to use with infants.
"Now with the cameras and sensors being so small you can get images that are the size of your pinky. As you can see with cell phones and other things, we can combine technologies that we never thought we could do," said Babcock.
The team's method is the first to look at infants' vision when they are free to walk around and play however they want. John Franchak, a doctoral student at NYU and leader of the project, said researchers discovered something completely surprising.
"We expected going into the study that infants would be looking at their mothers constantly because that was common knowledge within [the field of] social cognition with infants."
But in a room full of toys scattered everywhere and obstacles to climb on and crawl on, the infants only looked toward their mothers about half the time. And even if they did look at their mothers, they looked at their mothers' faces only about 15 percent of the time.
"If infants aren't looking at their mothers as much as we thought then that changes the way we might think about how infants learn about the world from other people," said Franchak.
In contrast to rarely looking at their mothers' faces,louboutin pas cher, toddlers almost always look directly at the object when reaching for it.
Another interesting finding was that while infants look directly at an obstacle before walking onto or over it, 75 percent of the time they don't always have to. Toddlers are able to use information from their peripheral vision and still walk very well. While the scientists are still trying to develop methods to do more basic research, they say this technology may eventually be used in a wide range of applications. According to Franchak, down the line it could offer more research applications that could help infants with developmental disorders, medical research and applied research.
So far, researchers have only scratched the surface in studying how young children navigate the world. They say future studies might guide doctors in helping children with autism or motor disabilities.

MOSCOW -- With Russia's upcoming presidential elections only one month away, Russia is gearing up for the elections and has invited some 350 international observers for the March 2 presidential poll.
"There will be no restrictions for any international monitoring commission, as long as it acts in accordance with Russian law,louboutin pas cher," Moscow's Central Election Commission (CEC) head Vladimir Churov told a press conference here on Monday.

The most common ailments in this Tibetan Plateau community are hepatitis and stomach diseases from the food, and frostbite and severe joint pains from the cold, Chaoguo said.
Chaoguo and his apprentice, 28-year-old Hargqin, who has accompanied him to study Tibetan medicine, are from Qinghai's Hainan prefecture.
There is a "low-level" traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Qumalai county, residents say.
"Local people only want Tibetan medicine. Tibetan medicine takes longer to show results but is better at completely curing diseases."
Temperatures drop to -25 C in winter, and it started snowing on Aug 4 this year. Most people live in tents, including 78 of the primary school's 137 students, who call seven cloth-and-pole structures their "dorms".
But Chaoguo said he is still adapting to Yege's harsh conditions.
"Some students could not find a cure to their illnesses outside, but they can here."
Because Yege's soil is as thin in nutrients as its air is in oxygen, and it's so cold for so much of the year, nothing but ankle-high grass can grow for several hundred square kilometers.

Empire State Building Goes Green

The tallest building in New York City is "going green." No…the Empire State Building is not being painted. But it is getting an environmental make-over. Faith Lapidus tells about the planned changes.
FAITH LAPIDUS:
The Empire State Building opened in nineteen thirty-one. It stands just over four hundred forty-three meters tall. For many years it was the tallest building in the world.
Soon, it will be one of the world's greenest. The owners of the historic building say a planned make-over will reduce energy use in the building by thirty-eight percent. They say it will save more than four million dollars a year in energy costs.
The Empire State Building has six thousand five hundred windows. New,coach outlet, special, thick glass will replace the glass currently in the windows. This insulated glass will make the inside of the building cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Paul Rode is a leader of the renovation project. He says the windows will insulate almost as well as the walls they are connected to. Workers will also add energy efficient lights and improved building control systems. These will include more modern air cooling and heating systems. The effort will help reduce carbon dioxide releases from the Empire State Building by more than one hundred thousand tons a year. Carbon dioxide is one of the gases that causes the warming of Earth's atmosphere.
Building owners say such make-overs are very important to reduce levels of greenhouse gases in New York. They say eighty percent of these gases come from city buildings.
The project is to be completed in four years. The first improvements will cost twenty million dollars. But Paul Rode says it is a sensible financial investment.

Our listener question this week comes from China. Candice wants to know if there is a state religion in the United States. The answer is no and the reason why goes back to the early days of America's history.
In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, many Europeans moved to colonial America in part to escape religious oppression. Thomas Jefferson and other early American leaders purposely designed a national government that had no established religion. They wanted to build a country that included many religions, where citizens were free to follow their own beliefs.
The First Amendment of the Constitution supports religious freedom and places religion outside the reach of the government. It states: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."
This idea is often described as "the separation of church and state." President Jefferson himself used this expression. In eighteen-oh-two, he sent a letter to a religious group in the state of Connecticut. He said that the First Amendment works by "building a wall of separation between church and state."
How the First Amendment applies to life in America has often been disputed. There is deep opposition between people who support nonreligious government policies and those who want religious values to be considered. The Supreme Court has heard many cases that test the meaning of the First Amendment.
For example, the Supreme Court ruled in nineteen forty-eight that religious classes could not be taught in public schools. In nineteen sixty-two the Court decided that public schools could not require students to say prayers.
The church and state debate is still going on today. For some people, policies about stem-cell research, same-sex marriage and abortion rights threaten religious beliefs. Other people believe it is wrong to ban these practices because of religious beliefs.
Even though there is no state religion in America, there is a large, beautiful religious center in the nation's capital called the Washington National Cathedral. The official name of this Episcopal church is the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. But an official says the church calls itself the Washington National Cathedral because many services of national interest have been held there. These include the funerals of three American presidents and national prayer services. This church receives no federal money and operates entirely on private donations.

You may not know Pete Seeger by name but you probably have heard his music. He has been writing songs and playing banjo for seventy years. Pete Seeger was born on May third, nineteen nineteen in New York City. That is where he celebrated his ninetieth birthday. Mario Ritter has our report on Pete Seeger and his party.

Thousands of people gathered at Madison Square Garden for a concert to honor Pete Seeger and his music. Artists of all ages joined Seeger on stage to sing the folk and protest songs that he made popular, like this one, "If I Had a Hammer."

Pete Seeger first became famous in the nineteen forties as a member of the Almanac Singers. He then helped form the Weavers. In nineteen fifty they had a huge hit with "Goodnight Irene," a song by blues musician Leadbelly.

Pete Seeger left the Weavers for an independent career. And he continued to be successful. But Seeger says he never planned on becoming a musician. He saw music as a way to bring about political change. He sought world peace, social justice, civil rights and workers' rights.
More recently, environmental conservation has become a chief issue for the musician. In fact, the profits from Seeger's big birthday concert went to Hudson River Sloop Clearwater. Pete Seeger established the non-profit group in nineteen sixty-nine. Its goal is to care for and protect the Hudson River and waters linked to it.

We often hear the term brain aneurysm.
Joe Biden had two of them twenty years ago. Doctors saved his life. Now the sixty-five year old senator from Delaware has just been named the vice presidential choice of Democrat Barack Obama.
Ohio's first black congresswoman, however, was not so lucky. Fifty-eight year old Representative Stephanie Tubbs Jones died last week within hours after a brain aneurysm burst. Doctors said she may have had no warning, which would not be unusual.
A brain aneurysm is a weak or thin area along an artery wall in the brain. It can become so thin that it ruptures and bleeds.
The most common form looks like a small, round berry hanging from the artery. The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota says as many as fifteen million people in the United States, or five percent, have a berry aneurysm. Fewer than thirty thousand will ever suffer a rupture.
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke estimates that forty percent of victims die within twenty-four hours. Another twenty-five percent die within six months.
People may live a long and healthy life and never know they have an aneurysm. But sometimes, if it gets big enough, it can cause pain or other problems that lead to its discovery.
In Joe Biden's case, his neck hurt for several weeks. Doctors thought he had a pinched nerve and a virus. But in February of nineteen eighty-eight, tests showed a leaking artery at the base of his brain. Doctors operated successfully, and again three months later for an aneurysm in another area.
Janet Sutherland is director of the Chicago chapter of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, a support group. She describes what happened when she suffered a rupture in March of two thousand four.
It began with the worst headache ever. She called emergency services. Rescuers found her collapsed in her kitchen.
The operation was a success. But she was in a coma for three weeks. She woke up blind and unable to move. She had two surgeries to return her sight and another to correct a second aneurysm. She spent five months in the hospital and many months in physical therapy.
Today Janet Sutherland can walk again, and says she can see better than ever.
Experts say most brain aneurysms happen in people born with an abnormality in an artery wall. Other causes can include head injuries,coach outlet, high blood pressure, infections, tobacco use and use of stimulant drugs.

Chronic lower back pain is very common, and it's very difficult to treat effectively. Doctors often suggest drugs or exercise or physical therapy, but the treatments don't always work. So some patients choose alternatives, such as acupuncture. A new study suggests that can be a pretty smart choice.
Given the popularity of alternative treatments for back pain, a research team from the Center for Health Studies in Seattle and other institutions decided to compare the results of conventional treatment with the results of acupuncture therapy.
More than 600 people took part, and the researchers divided them into four groups.
Two of the groups got different kinds of acupuncture. A third group got simulated acupuncture with toothpicks. Their results were compared with a control group that received what the researchers called "usual care" - drugs, physical therapy and so on.
The researchers found that acupuncture was more effective than the usual medical care. For example, before starting treatments, participants' back pain prevented them from doing an average of 11 activities.
"Those that received 'usual care' went down to nine activities that they couldn't do, and those that received acupuncture or simulated acupuncture reported six [activities that they couldn't do]," said Dan Cherkin,doudoune moncler, lead author of the study. "This is after the seven weeks of acupuncture treatment. And some of these effects actually persisted for one year."
Cherkin said there was no significant difference based on the kind of acupuncture - or even simulated acupuncture.
"There was no apparent advantage of individualizing the treatment to the patient, and there was also no benefit apparently of actually inserting the needle compared to just stimulating points that were believed to be effective superficially."
Cherkin says his study suggests that if your back hurts, and the usual treatment isn't helping, you might consider acupuncture.
"Well, I think for the patient, the take-home message is that acupuncture has the potential to offer relief of pain that other treatments that they may have tried did not provide them. All the people in our study had never had acupuncture before, and roughly one out of five benefitted in the short run."
And for doctors, Cherkin said the message is that acupuncture is a reasonable option for patients who aren't getting relief from other treatments or who have side effects from drugs given to counter pain or inflammation.

New Studies Reveal Infants' World of Vision

Scientists have discovered a groundbreaking way of learning how infants use visual information to adapt to new surroundings. Although eye-tracking technology has been around for years, it is now small enough to be used to examine how toddlers view their environment. Recent studies using this technology show important implications for studying young children's perceptual, cognitive and social development.
Imagine seeing the world through an infant's eyes. How do they navigate their new surroundings? Researchers at New York University led by Karen Adolph may have discovered a way to find out.
"This project is about natural vision and how it develops, so there's tons of research about vision in sort of artificial situations but surprisingly after more than a hundred years of study, researchers know almost nothing about where people look and why in everyday life," said Adolph, a professor of psychology at NYU.
Finn, an 8.5-month-old toddler, was among the participants in this project. She was being coaxed to wear the eye-tracking headgear, which consists of two cameras - one that's looking out on the scene to get the baby's perspective, and another that's looking at the eye to track the movement of the pupil. A computer analyzed both camera views to determine exactly where Finn was looking. The headgear weighs just 45.4 grams.
Jason Babcock is the founder of Positive Science, a New York company that has developed eye-tracking devices over the last decade. He worked to make the eye-tracking hardware smaller and lighter so that it would be possible to use with infants.
"Now with the cameras and sensors being so small you can get images that are the size of your pinky. As you can see with cell phones and other things, we can combine technologies that we never thought we could do," said Babcock.
The team's method is the first to look at infants' vision when they are free to walk around and play however they want. John Franchak, a doctoral student at NYU and leader of the project, said researchers discovered something completely surprising.
"We expected going into the study that infants would be looking at their mothers constantly because that was common knowledge within [the field of] social cognition with infants."
But in a room full of toys scattered everywhere and obstacles to climb on and crawl on, the infants only looked toward their mothers about half the time. And even if they did look at their mothers, they looked at their mothers' faces only about 15 percent of the time.
"If infants aren't looking at their mothers as much as we thought then that changes the way we might think about how infants learn about the world from other people," said Franchak.
In contrast to rarely looking at their mothers' faces,louboutin pas cher, toddlers almost always look directly at the object when reaching for it.
Another interesting finding was that while infants look directly at an obstacle before walking onto or over it, 75 percent of the time they don't always have to. Toddlers are able to use information from their peripheral vision and still walk very well. While the scientists are still trying to develop methods to do more basic research, they say this technology may eventually be used in a wide range of applications. According to Franchak, down the line it could offer more research applications that could help infants with developmental disorders, medical research and applied research.
So far, researchers have only scratched the surface in studying how young children navigate the world. They say future studies might guide doctors in helping children with autism or motor disabilities.

MOSCOW -- With Russia's upcoming presidential elections only one month away, Russia is gearing up for the elections and has invited some 350 international observers for the March 2 presidential poll.
"There will be no restrictions for any international monitoring commission, as long as it acts in accordance with Russian law,louboutin pas cher," Moscow's Central Election Commission (CEC) head Vladimir Churov told a press conference here on Monday.

Kasyanov has ten days ahead "to submit a complaint to the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. His name will be included in the ballot if the court's decision will differ from that of ours," Churov said.
The CEC denied Kasyanov's application at a Sunday meeting, alleging there are too many invalid signatures among the 2 million that he was required to gather from supporters for registration.
The CEC has stopped receiving application for candidate registration and four registered candidates, including Dmitry Medvedev, nominated by the United Russia party and endorsed by Putin, will run for the country's top job in the March election.
Other candidates include Gennady Zyuganov, nominated by the Communist Party, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, by the Liberal Democratic Party and Andrei Bogdanov, an independent candidate and leader of the Democratic Party.
Zyuganov, who has reportedly vowed to quit from the race, ruled out the possibility on Monday.
"We are participating in the elections and we are serious about it. We have an opportunity to put up a serious fight for our country," Zyuganov told Moscow-based Echo radio on Monday.
Zyuganov urged Medvedev to accept live TV election debates, though the latter's campaign staff has claimed that he will not participate in joint election campaign appearances on national and regional state television and radio channels.

The most common ailments in this Tibetan Plateau community are hepatitis and stomach diseases from the food, and frostbite and severe joint pains from the cold, Chaoguo said.
Chaoguo and his apprentice, 28-year-old Hargqin, who has accompanied him to study Tibetan medicine, are from Qinghai's Hainan prefecture.
There is a "low-level" traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Qumalai county, residents say.
"Local people only want Tibetan medicine. Tibetan medicine takes longer to show results but is better at completely curing diseases."
Temperatures drop to -25 C in winter, and it started snowing on Aug 4 this year. Most people live in tents, including 78 of the primary school's 137 students, who call seven cloth-and-pole structures their "dorms".
But Chaoguo said he is still adapting to Yege's harsh conditions.
"Some students could not find a cure to their illnesses outside, but they can here."
Because Yege's soil is as thin in nutrients as its air is in oxygen, and it's so cold for so much of the year, nothing but ankle-high grass can grow for several hundred square kilometers.
